Playwright series: Richard Brinsley Sheridan

This the playwright of School for Scandal. My husband kept asking me why I was painting George Washington. I think its the hair.

The Quote I chose was "If to raise malicious smiles at the infirmities or misfortunes of those who have never injured us be the province of wit or humour, Heaven grant me a double portion of dullness."

Playwright Series: Ben Jonson

This painting was fun to do because Ben Jonson has an interesting face. The last time I saw a show written by him, I laughed and laughed and laughed. So there was a good vibe whilst going into this painting.

The quote from him is : Success produces confidence; confidence relaxes industry, and negligence ruins the reputation which accuracy had raised. "

Playwright series: Christopher Marlowe

I wasn't sure whether or not to include Marlowe, but then I saw a picture of him. What an odd face and hair, I thought it would be a fun challenge, so I painted him.

His quote: " Was this the face that launched a thousand ships, and burnt the topless towers of Ileum?"

Playwright Series: Oscar Wilde

I like Oscar Wilde, perhaps because he was such a personality alongside of being an enjoyable playwright.  The picture of him made his skin look soooo smooth.

The quote I chose from him : "It is what you read when you don't have to that determines what you will be when you can't help it."

Playwright series: Euripedes

I only had a statue to go off for this one, so  I don't really know if that is what his eyebrows look like, but I took an educated guess.  This hair was a challenge and a bit of fun.

Euripedes quote " Human misery must somewhere have a stop; there is no wind that always blows a storm; great good fortune comes to failure in the end. All is change; all yields its place and goes; to persevere, trusting in hopes he has, is courage in a man. The coward despairs"

Playwright series: Shakespeare

Ahh.. Dear old Shakespeare. This was actually my first painting in the series... He is a bit blotchier than the others, but I like it a little, so I haven't gone back into it..

The quote around him: "All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players. They have their exits and their entrances; And one man in time plays many parts."

Playwright series: Moliere

I started doing this series a week before christmas and each one has a quote that connects with me. On this one it is particularly hard to read as Moliere has so much hair that there was very little room for text.  Those crazy wigs.

"It is not only what we do, but also what we do not do, for which we are accountable."

Playwright portrait series: chekov

It has been awhile since I have sat down and painted something, but I just had an urge right before Christmas to paint, so I have. Three are in acrylics, and are 16 by 16.

I have included a quote by the playwright on each one.. It's hard to read, but it does say:

"Everything on earth is beautiful, everything- except what we ourselves think and do when we forget the higher purposes of life and our own human dignity."
